Scientist I - Process Development

Position Overview:

As a Scientist I in the Process & Analytical Development (P&AD) team, you will be responsible for providing technical expertise in the creation and optimization of manufacturing processes crucial for the production of cutting-edge cell therapies for liver disease. Collaborating closely with multidisciplinary teams, you will contribute to the design, execution, and improvement of the final drug product (the ReLiver®), ensuring process scalability, reproducibility, and regulatory compliance. This role offers a unique opportunity to make a significant impact on patient care while developing your skills in a dynamic and collaborative environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Conceive, design, and execute experiments to support the development of cell-based drug substances and combination (device) products throughout the product lifecycle - from early development through clinical phases.

  • Apply design of experiments (DoE) principles, perform statistical data analyses, and interpret results to inform and drive process optimization and improvements.

  • Identify critical process parameters (CPPs) and develop control strategies to ensure drug substance consistency and alignment with the quality target product profile (QTPP).

  • Develop and optimize robust, scalable platforms and processes to support product advancement from research through clinical manufacturing.

  • Scale up processes using advanced bioreactor systems (ranging from 100 mL to 50 L), ensuring the preservation of product quality and critical performance attributes.

  • Enhance existing analytical methods and establish novel techniques to evaluate product quality and performance at various stages of development.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams—including Analytical Development, Biomaterials Development, and Preclinical—to produce materials for in vitro and in vivo studies.

  • Provide technical leadership and innovative problem-solving to address complex development challenges.

  • Maintain detailed, accurate documentation of experimental protocols, results, and conclusions in compliance with internal standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Author and review standard operating procedures (SOPs) to support consistent and compliant operations.

  • Foster a collaborative team culture by sharing technical insights and providing mentorship to junior team members.

Qualifications:

  • Ph.D. or Master’s degree in Biochemical Engineering, Cell Biology, Biotechnology, or a related field, with 4+ years of relevant industry experience.

  • Required: Demonstrated expertise in induced pluripotent stem cell (iPSC) culture and differentiation. The ideal candidate will have hands-on experience with:
    - Suspension-based differentiation methods
    - Differentiation into multiple cell lineages
    - Industry-level development of differentiated cell therapy products

  • Required: Proficiency in key analytical techniques, including flow cytometry, qPCR, ELISA, and other relevant cell-based assays.

  • Experience in bioprocessing, with demonstrated skills in one or more of the following areas:
    - Bioreactor operation and scale-up
    - Cell concentration and separation techniques
    - Perfusion systems
    - Cryopreservation methods

  • Strong statistical acumen, with a proven ability to apply data-driven and statistical approaches to solve complex problems and clearly communicate results.

  • Track record of independently planning, executing, and analyzing experiments, contributing meaningfully to both hands-on laboratory work and strategic experimental design.

  • Experience working on cross-functional, multidisciplinary teams, with the ability to collaborate effectively in fast-paced, dynamic environments and adapt to shifting priorities.

  • Excellent critical thinking and problem-solving skills, with the ability to analyze complex data sets, identify trends, and propose actionable solutions.

  • Familiarity with Design of Experiments (DoE) and Quality by Design (QbD) methodologies.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to clearly present findings, influence decision-making, and engage in productive team discussions.
